Kim graduated from Mansfield High School in 1974. He attended undergraduate school at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with degrees in English and history, and a certificate in Latin American studies. Kim worked for a number of years in the construction field. He later attended the University of Iowa where he graduated from the masters program in urban and regional planning and the University of Iowa Law School with distinction.

Kim worked with the City of Iowa City Attorney's Office prior to joining Harding and Hill in 1994. He primarily handles criminal, domestic, personal injury and municipal related areas of law. He has also taught media law as an adjunct professor at Bloomsburg University. Kim is a member of the Iowa Bar, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Columbia-Montour Bar Association.
